YES, I’m yelling, because YES: NEED. That was an intentional Caps Lock — because if there’s one thing I’m certain about growing your business, it’s that you have to have a website.
(And not just any website, a GOOD website. But let’s just focus on getting your site up for the sake of this post, shall we?)
Now, I know you’re thinking:
“Sara, you SAYYY it’s a need — but, honestly, do I really NEED need a website? Can’t I just rock it out on social media?”
Yeah, sure, you could. You could just post on stories. Or rely on Threads. Or hope for the best in Facebook groups.
…but what happens when people decide they like you and want to book you, hire you, or buy your thing? Where will they go?
*crickets*
YEAH. THAT’S RIGHT. THEY’LL LOOK FOR YOUR WEBSITE to take the next step.
So, if you’re a business owner — specifically a service-based business owner — a website isn’t just a nice-to-have you can put off until you “feel ready” or “have the time.” It’s essential.
& I’m about to give you 21 reasons why businesses need a professional website.
Let’s start with the basics. Having a website instantly makes you look like a legitimate, professional business. It’s proof you’re not just some random person offering services but someone who’s serious about what they do. Trust me, clients notice.
No matter how new you are, your website makes you look legit.
I’m a huuuge proponent of building your FOUNDATION before building your FOLLOWING. When you start with social media, people can tell how new you are (because you have 1 post and half a follower!), but when you start with a website, no one can tell.
Your website is your chance to control your brand’s vibe from top to bottom. Colors, fonts, photos, words—it’s all you, and it gives clients a taste of what working with you feels like.
Who wants to sift through social media posts to find what you do, how much it costs, or when you’re available?
Spoiler alert: no one.
That’s why businesses need a professional website—a single place where clients can find everything they need to know, without the scrolling scavenger hunt.
Got a few blog posts, case studies, or a portfolio to share? A website lets you showcase your expertise in a way that says, “I know what I’m talking about.” Clients want to feel like they’re hiring an expert, and this is how you prove it.
When leads can find all the info they need on their own time — without any contact from you — it’s a win-win. They get their questions answered, and you don’t have to answer the same questions in your DMs over and over (and over) again.
The point? Your website answers your readers’ questions before you even have to ask them.
There’s nothinggg more annoying than looking for info and not finding it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve LOVED what I see on someone’s socials, gone to their profile to find the link in their bio to learn more (or buy!), and not been able to find what I need because *gasp* they don’t have a website.
Which means: THEY JUST LOST OUT ON A SALE.
I literally had my credit card in hand, ready to buy, but now I’m annoyed that I can’t do it myself.
I don’t WANT to wait for someone to respond over DM. I want to be able to take action when I feel ready to do so.
Want to grow your email list? Sign a new client? Make a sale? Without doing any constant work?
With a website, you can do all of the above without ever lifting a finger beyond writing your website copy once and hitting ‘publish.’ It’s the easiest way to build relationships with potential clients before they’re ready to hire.
Social media is great, but it’s hard to show up in searches unless someone’s already looking specifically for you.
With an SEO-friendly website, you can reach people who aren’t already in your circle but are looking for someone who does exactly what you do.
(Who wouldn’t want leads coming to them with zero effort on the regular? Like, hello..???)
The best way to show up in more organic searches is by blogging. And where does your blog live?
(The answer is not Substack.)
YOUR WEBSITE.
Unlike on social, where algorithms decide what shows up, your website is your space. You control the narrative, which means clients see exactly what you want them to see, no matter what platform is trending.
A website with built-in booking or inquiry forms saves everyone time. No more back-and-forth DMs to figure out when you’re free. Clients can book right on your site, which is the ultimate convenience.
People trust businesses with websites because it shows commitment and stability. If you’ve invested in a site, you’re more likely to be around next year—important for clients looking for a long-term partnership.
If your competitors don’t have a website, congrats! You’re automatically ahead.
And if they do? Your website can showcase what makes you different in a way social media just can’t.
Even if you have the exact same services and pricing, your website can be the thing that makes a new client choose you over someone else.
If you have happy clients, show it off! Testimonials on your website build trust and act as proof that you’re as good as you say. And let’s be real—people need that extra nudge.
Your social media bio only has so much space. Linking to a website lets people dive deeper into your services, read testimonials, and maybe even sign up for a lead magnet or newsletter.
Your Instagram can only take them so far. Your website acts as a hub for everything else they need to know before hiring you.
A website lets you break down your process, so potential clients know exactly what working with you will look like. It sets clear expectations, and the transparency makes them feel even more confident about reaching out.
Whether it’s service descriptions or FAQs, your website helps manage client expectations right off the bat, which is key for a smoother, happier working relationship.
Your website works while you sleep. Clients in different time zones or night owls looking for help can learn about your services, check availability, and even book calls anytime. And you don’t even have to be awake for them to do that.
Let’s say you’re a social media strategist. If you post helpful blog articles, guides, or resources, you’re positioning yourself as a go-to resource for anyone with questions. Clients love hiring experts who share valuable insights.
People take businesses with websites more seriously. A website can make you look more established, successful, and like someone who’s here to stay.
With a website, you can use analytics to see who’s visiting, what they’re looking at, and how long they’re staying. It’s like having a behind-the-scenes pass to what your audience cares about most.
Owning your domain is crucial. It means no one else can snag it, and it keeps your brand consistent. If you’re serious about your business, you want to own your online real estate.
A website grows with you. Want to add a new service? Launch a course? Start a blog? It’s easy to make updates that reflect your business as it evolves, keeping clients in the loop without endless social media announcements that may or may not be seen.
The answer is yes. It’s an investment in your business, your brand, and your clients’ experience. Social media can be a great starting point, but a website is what will set you up for long-term success.
So if you don’t have a website, take this as your sign that all businesses need a professional website.
